Route 66 Association of Missouri’s 22nd Anniversary Motor Tour, September 9,10, and 11, 2011

March 24, 2011

The Route 66 Association of Missouri will be cruising through this nation’s Civil War heritage and the Mother Road’s past, present and future on its 22nd annual Motor Tour.  This year’s tour will be held September 9, 10, and 11, 2011.  The tour will start in Miami, OK and will end at Skippy’s Route 66 Restaurant east of Leasburg, MO.

Tour registration begins on Friday, September 9, at 4:00 p.m. at the Econo Lodge in Miami, OK (900 E. Steve Owens Blvd in Miami, OK), where a block of rooms has been reserved for tour goers.  Registration will go until 10:00 p.m. Friday night.  There will be information on activities and things to do in Miami, OK available at registration.

On Saturday, September 10, tour registration will resume at 7:30 a.m. at the Econo Lodge and the tour will depart at 8:00 a.m. from the Econo Lodge.  This year’s motor tour will be making several stops between Miami, OK and Leasburg Missouri, at places highlighting the nation’s Civil War Heritage and the past, present and future of Route 66.  Details on these stops will be included in your Motor Tour Agenda Folder available at registration.  In addition, “a passport@ will be provided at registration that participants can have stamped at many of these stops. The passport will contain valuable information about the history of the Route 66 Association of Missouri Route 66 in Missouri, and some of the stops we will make on the tour.  There will also be information about other suggested stops provided at registration.

One of the tour’s first stops will be in Baxter Springs, KS at the Jasper County Courthouse where we will take in the town’s Route 66 and Civil War heritage.  From there, tour goers will proceed on their own to the Sand Spring Resort, where the tour will make its midpoint stop.  The Sand Spring Resort is approximately 12 miles northwest of Lebanon, across the Niangua River Bridge from Bennett Spring State Park.

We have arranged for a block of rooms to be held at the Sand Spring Resort, and Saturday night=s dinner will be held at the resort, where we will be able to once again enjoy the excellent Bar-B-Cue these folks provide.

On Sunday after the 8:30 a.m. nondenominational worship service, tour goers will congregate at Route 66 Sodas (makers of the world famous Route 66 Root Beer) and proceed caravan style from there to Waynesville.   From there, tour goers will proceed on their own to Skippy’s Route 66 Restaurant on Route 66 east of Leasburg for the tour-ending lunch stop at 1:00 p.m.

The designated stops and caravans are highly recommended, but all tour participants are free to cruise at their own pace and select their own stops.

Additional information on any planned stops or activities along the way will be made available at registration.  For more information contact Kip Welborn at (314-776-7385, rudkip@sbcglobal.net, Jane Dippel at 314-843-7132, vestaon66@cs.com, or visit our website (where you will find a registration form you can download) at www.missouri66.org.  Here’s hoping that you can join us on our trek through the past, present and future of Route 66 in Missouri!
